WILLIAM THOMAS MAHER
Army Air Force

(1941 HHS?)

George Toriello sent me this information on William Thomas Maher on Friday January 10, 2020.

William T. Maher’s name is located on the Plaque at City Hall and the
Original Wall Unit at Hackensack High School.

William T. Maher was born June 26, 1923 in New Jersey, and according to the 1930 census, he lived at 194 Berkshire Road Hasbrouck Heights, NJ with his father, Edward F. Maher, and his mother, Margaret E. Maher.  We have not found when William T. Maher joined the service, but military records show he was serving in the Army Air Force as a 2nd lieutenant with the 40th squadron at Gowen Field, Idaho when his plane crashed and he died at the age of 20 on March 8, 1944.  His father, Edward F. Maher, signed for the Headstone application on April 15, 1944, while the family was living at 215 Clinton Place Hackensack, NJ.   William T. Mahers funeral was in Idaho.  William T. Maher found his final resting place in Mount Calvary Cemetery in the town of Wilton, in Hillsborough County, New Hampshire USA.

On Find-a-Grave, they have an account of the funeral service at the time.

Click here to view an interesting note is that someone from the Doremus American Legion Post went out to Idaho to represent the family and community of Hackensack.
